Lyme Disease

Lyme disease is spread by ticks.  It is considered an epidemic in humans in Marin County.  Monthly administration of Frontline Plus on all dogs and cats is the first line of defense for lyme disease.  Northbay Animal Hospital also has an effective lyme vaccine for dogs.  It requires 2 doses 3 weeks apart the first year and then annual boosters to remain effective.  Owners that hike with their dogs should check their pets for ticks after a hike and have someone else look them over also.  The most common lyme disease vector is the deer tick, which is not much larger than a typewritten period – so look carefully.
