Foxtails
Foxtails
Foxtails are the seeds of the weeds that make California gold. When these weeds dry up in spring the seeds are spread by the wind and by animals walking/running through them. Since foxtails are shaped like an arrowhead they only move in one direction after they come into contact with a pet. At Northbay Animal Hospital, we find foxtails in ears, eyes, tonsils, under the skin and in most other orifices of dogs and cats. Foxtails cause pain, abscesses and other complications. Owners are advised to avoid weedy areas and have pets examined immediately when a foxtail is suspected.
