Tips From Our Vets: Preventing Heat Stroke
Dogs are great because they motivate us to get out and get active. They're the perfect exercise companions! But it's best to be smart about exercising with your dog. Follow these tips to ensure you keep your partner safe:
-
Avoid the heat of the day--plan your hiking or jogging excursiongs for early morning or late afternoon.
-
Bring along some water--collapsible water bowls make it easy to keep your dog refreshed.
-
Don't leave your dog on tie-down in the full sun.
-
Never leave your dog in the car. It doesn't take long for inside temperatures to skyrocket. You know how hot your car gets when you get into it on a hot afternoon--you immediately roll down the windowns or turn on the air conditioner. Your dog doesn't have those options.
Signs of heatstroke include: excessive panting, bright red tongue and gums, staggering, stupor and even seizures. If your dog displays any of these signs, give him some cool water and get to a veterinarian immediately.
