After moving from San Diego to Marin five years ago, we struggled to find a full veterinary service we felt completely comfortable with.  We struggled to find a compassionate doctor with a competent staff and state-of-the-art medical office.  Imagine our relief to find all of that and more at Northbay Animal Hospital, right in our Terra Linda neighborhood!

Over the past few years, Dr. Walters, Dr. Hansson and their fabulous staff have taken care of both our dachshunds and us!  From severe skin issues to E. coli infections to a frightening bought with gastritis, Northbay Animal Hospital has gotten our boys through some very tough times.

As registered nurses, we know the importance of making the patient and family feel safe, comfortable and cared for.  Dr. Walters and his staff consistently do just that.  They make our dachsunds (and us) feel important and like members of their "extended family".  It's hard to place a value in that and even more difficult to find the right words of gratitude!

Molly.jpg

You can learn from "Molly"

Molly was rescued at 4 years old from a shelter and has been living happily with Mrs. Kernfeld ever since.

Last year she had a very advanced gum disease that required extensive surgery to save her teeth.

After the procedure, Mrs. Kernfeld came back for instructions on dental home care.  Since then, she has been brushing Molly’s teeth every day.  Mrs. Kernfeld admits that Molly was not very cooperative at first.  In fact, it took almost 6 months for Molly to fully accept brushing.  However, Mrs. Kernfeld was persistent and in the end Molly learned to accept teeth brushing and is now looking forward to the time of day when brushing takes place.

As you can see in the picture below, Molly’s teeth look great over a year after the last dental treatment.

DSCN4484.JPG

This is how Mrs. Kernfeld trained Molly to accept teeth brushing:

1. She gently puts Molly on her back.

2. She brushes her teeth the same time every day so Molly got into a routine.

3. She started by using a finger to apply the toothpaste in Molly’s mouth.

4. She then began brushing in just one area of Molly’s mouth and gradually working her way to the rest of the mouth.

5. She is now using a soft brush.

6. She begins by brushing from the back of the mouth with forward motion toward the front of the mouth.  Mrs. Kernfeld says it’s easier to brush this way.

7. Mrs. Kernfeld replaces the brush every 3 months to maintain the efficiency of brushing.

8. She says Molly is looking great and doing great, even at 9 years of age.

9. Mrs. Kernfeld believes the effort is well worth it.

We too believe all pet owners should brush their pets’ teeth.

If you believe this too, but are not sure how, please call us at 415-499-8387 to make an appointment to bring your pet in for a free session on teeth brushing.

It’s well worth it!

Dear Dr. Walters,

It is with both sadness and gratitude that I write to thank you and your wonderful staff for taking care of Goldie with such love and gentleness during these past months.  Although I did not relish "sickness visits" to Northbay Animal Hospital, the friendliness of your staff and the pleasant reception area eased my anxiety about Goldie's current health problem.

I felt your heartfelt sympathy and understanding when I had to let Goldie go in April.  Her ashes in the lovely pine box will be scattered over her favorite walks with great love.

I am currently reading a new book entitled Will I See My Dog in Heaven? by Jack Wintz, OFM, who supports the belief that we will be reunited with all animals in paradise.  So the answer is yes!  I will meet Goldie again in heaven, where we will cross over the "rainbow bridge" and walk together again over the green hills forevermore.

With much gratitude to you and your staff,

Diane Smith

To Dr. Walters, Dr. Hansson, Mr. Cohen and the staff,

We wish to thank you for giving us back our little bundle of licks, barks, cuddles, rolls, runs and nibbles -- none of which he was able to do when he was brought in after being injured while we were out!

He has gone from being paralyzed from the waist down to more active than I can recall ever seeing him in his 13 years of life!  When all else failed and I was asked to consider acupuncture, I was somewhat skeptical, but also desperate to fix this great little yorkie, so we went to meet Mr. Cohen on a Wednesday.  Bugsy had his first treatment and Thursday when I sat his food down, prepared to hold and feed him again, I realized he had just walked up behind me!  Wow!

By the following week he was not only healed from the current injury, but was actually walking better than he ever had!  He had always had difficulty with the luxation of both hind knees, but that too was also greatly improved!  So we want to thank you for giving life back to Bugsy and immense joy to us!

Thank you!

Betty P. Jones, R.N., B.S.N.

Dear Dr. Walters,

Thank you for recommending Royal Canine dog food for Thomas.  It's been three weeks now and I've noticed how shiny and soft his coat is.  It really is true...you are what you eat!

Thanks again Dr. Walters!

Dear Dr. Walters and staff,

We adopted Baxter December 2005 when he was about 3 years old.  We moved to Marin August 2008 and he seems to be adjusting well indoors.  I visited your office before bringing Baxter in and was treated very well and found all your staff to be helpful and friendly.  Baxter's first visit went well and his second visit went well too.  Every time we have phone contact we are asked how we are and we are asked how Baxter is.  That has not been my experience anywhere else that I have gone for veterinary services.  I would and will recommend your office to my friends.

Sincerely,

Carol Henningsen and Baxter

Dear Dr. Walters,

It's a MIRACLE!  My cat Tai is seldom limping now and capable of moving quickly up and down the steps in my condo.  This is a delightful change in her behavior.  Thank you for the great medical and dental care that contributed to this change.  Dr. Hansson and you, along with the contributions of your friendly, competent and concerned staff, have returned to me a truly HAPPY CAT!  Thanks to you all!  You are gems in the field of animal care.

Cheers,

Betty Wallar

Monique,

I got your message and Oso is doing great.  He didn't really like the heating pad, but he loves the massages and the bump is finally almost gone.  Thank you all so much for seeing him on such short notice and on the weekend.  I have raved about your service to over a dozen friends and coworkers.

Again, thank you!

April 7, 2010

I was very happy that I called on a Friday morning and was able to see the vet that same day at 11am.  Julian was also able to quote me a few costs on the phone so I knew what I might be in for.  The clinic was totally fine -- no other animals in the wait room, which was probably good for my cat!  I don't remember the vet tech's name, but she was SO great.  My niece was with me that day and I think she now wants to be like her.  She was gentle, explained thigns very thoroughly and showed me how to provide all the post-visit care.  The next day, they followed up with the heartworm test and the doctor even got on the phone to chat about Frank.  I was impressed and felt very taken care of.

Very friendly vet assistants and doctors.  I never had trouble making appointments at a convenient time.  Everything I needed they gave me.  I've brought both of my dogs to them and will be bringing my third pooch here as well.  Let's not discuss my family's obsession with animals now though...I'm just glad these kind folks take care of my family's obsession...and the objects of it.  Both doctors are attentive, gentle and I go out of my way to bring my pets here.  I've also bought several products from them, like doggie toothpaste.

If it's not too much trouble to come up to Marin for you (it's 20 minutes from SF and a beautiful drive), I suggest you do it.

I never used their hotel service, but they provide one for your pets, and I definitely trust them to take care of my dogs!

I have been taking my animals to Northbay Animal Hospital for over 25 years.  I've taken my dogs and cat there and have always received excellent service with very satisfactory results with Dr. Walters and his staff.  I would not hesitate to recommend Northbay Animal Hospital to any of my friends.

July 5, 2010

I've been bringing my dogs to Northbay Animal Hospital for over 25 years and they have all received very excellent care from knowledgeable, caring vets and staff.  My girl dog, Meg, was diagnosed with lymphoma at age 5-1/2 and due to the excellent care she received there, she is now approaching her 12th birthday.  My experience when needing to know all my options has been respect for my decisions when hard ones need to be made.  Tests rule out some possibilities and give needed information for a correct diagnosis.  I value the kindness and care all my dogs have received from everyone there and will continue to look to Dr. Walters and Dr. Hansson and every staff member for help with the health of my dogs.

June 18, 2010

I have nothing but good things to say about Northbay Animal Hospital.  I've been bringing my dogs there for many, many years.  I even got one from them when she was abandoned there.  A few months earlier I had to put one down (Toby).  They were all just as upset as I was.  Nikkie is a great dog.  She was shown to me when I was dropping off Cricket.  They are both still very happy and healthy dogs.  They just turned 15 and 14 years old.

These people do good work.  They all work very hard to keep our pet(s) healthy.

I have been extremely happy with the care that I have received over the past 16 years at Northbay Animal Hospital for my cat and my dog, a Bichon, Molly.  I have found the veterinary advice and care to be very sound and have found the staff to be extremely friendly to me at all times over all of these years.  I'm a very satisfied client!  I am very happy to be able to take advantage of the high-tech ultrasound equipment available at the hospital for my dog.  Through abdominal ultrasound diagnosis, the vets at Northbay have been able to monitor my dog's early liver abnormality and, as a result, have prescribed a daily supplement which has greatly improved her liver function, as evidenced by subsequent blood test results.  As far as I am concerned, Northbay Animal Hospital is top-notch for pet care!  I recently boarded Molly at Northbay, where she was taken care of splendidly.
